After a ruinous fire has destroyed almost all his work, budding artist Johnny Avery is attempting to get back on his feet. Helped by an enthusiastic Australian gallery owner, he sets up his new studio in Stanley, a small village on the south side of Hong Kong island. Here, just along the sea front from the world-famous Stanley market, Johnny finds a steady demand for his services. But this isn’t the only steady thing he wants – his quest to find a Chinese girlfriend colours his every day. One thing’s for sure: it’s not easy!In this sequel to her much-admired Dragon Boat Café, Esther-Margaret Hood takes Johnny through his artistic paces with clients and locations all over 1980s Hong Kong as he searches for that one special girl. He’s very much the career painter these days, but perhaps art isn’t everything after all. This deceptively easy-to-read novel takes an authentic look at a unique time and place.
